Grab & Go: Fun Things to Do This First Week in March

From the Dana Point whale festival to cheap eats at a local favorite, this is a great week to get out with the family.

Bundle up and grab the family to enjoy this week's local events!

  1.  Saturday and Sunday, March 5-6, Festival of Whales

In Dana Point, start by grabbing some coffee at J.C. Beans Coffee House (truly, one of the best around) and enjoy the Festival of Whales parade at 10 a.m. It runs on PCH from Selva Road to Golden Lantern Street.  A free shuttle runs from Dana Point Harbor to the parade route, in case you feel the need to grab one of those fabulous harbor bagels before.  Immediately following the parade will be A Whale of a Block Party at La Plaza Park.  Lots of activities will be held over the weekend, including events at the Ocean Institute, sailing lessons for ages 5 and up, and a free showing of A Shark Tale at 6:30 p.m.  See dpfestivalofwhales.com for more information and a list of all activities going on during the weekend.

2.  Race to Nowhere screening, March 3 at St. John's Episcopal School, Santa Margarita, at 7 p.m.  This documentary is a must-see for you and older children. It tells heartbreaking stories of young students across the country who have been pushed to the brink. Children today are facing stress-related illnesses due to homework, activities and the need to be better than average to attend college.  Tickets sell quickly,  however. Screenings are all across the country. Go to racetonowhere.com to purchase tickets.

3.  Friday, March 4, Help Me Grow at Zoomars Petting Zoo in San Juan Capistrano, 2 to 5 p.m. Zoomars is hosting a charity event benefiting the Help Me Grow Foundation in Orange County. Each family can purchase a $10 family admission and a fun pack that includes one pony ride, one train ride and a basket of carrots to feed the animals (a $32 value). Lakeshore Learning will be providing a craft table. Enjoy the animal-themed story time. The Help Me Grow Foundation connects children and their families to developmental services to enhance the behavior, learning and development of children from birth through age 5.  It is recommended that you have the flier for the $10 Family Fun Pack.  It can be printed at helpmegrowoc.org.
