David Rose and Sandy Gray will be showing a selection from “La Sirena”, a series of magical underwater photographs exploring the myth of the mermaid. In these gorgeous images, Ms. Gray is freediving sans gear in the California kelp forests and in other locations with various sea creatures including manatees, sea lions and stingrays. Gray and Rose spent 10 years traveling to Mexico, Hawaii, the Cayman Islands, The Channel Islands and manatee preserves in Florida to capture these unique and beautiful images.

David is an avid scuba diver and took the first underwater photo of Sandy with a disposable snapshot camera while snorkeling in Florida. The results inspired them to plan their next photo session in the kelp forests of California with a professional underwater camera system. “The images were so sensual and beautiful, we immediately realized that we had never seen anything like them before. In most underwater photographs, the human subjects are in distracting gear, while Sandy seemed to be as natural a part of the landscape as the kelp and fish”.

In some of the images Gray dons the actual mermaid tail from the film “Splash”. Gray and Rose rented the tail from Disney Studios complete with the requisite “Mermaid Wrangler”.  The wrangler glued Ms. Gray into the tail aboard a Catalina chartered dive boat and oversaw security and safety of the tail!

Sandy Gray grew up in Southern California swimming in the Pacific Ocean. She was a tandem surfing partner of world champion surfer Mike Doyle. After attending California Institute of the Arts, Sandy began a 20-year professional dance career working in various Hollywood musicals including “Grease” (lead dancer) and Mel Brooks’ “History of the World, Part One” (as a synchronize swimming nun). She is an exhibiting photographer and works as an actress and model in TV and print advertising campaigns.

David Rose has been working as a portrait photographer specializing in personality portraits since 1990. His photos have appeared in a vast array of magazines such as Vanity Fair, The New York Times Sunday Magazine, Vogue, Esquire, and National Geographic, and others. His subjects are some of the world’s most famous personalities including U2, Jeff Bridges, Jack Nicholson, Johnny Depp, Nicole Kidman, and Kate Winslett. He spent 10 years as Bruce Springsteen’s personal photographer, which included photographing two of his album covers, concert tours and family and friends.
