Teen Records Song 'Caught in Between,' Which Will Air Tuesday

Sidney Bowen, 13, has been recording music most of her young life. The new song's lyrics are relevant to teens today, according to the man who inked the deal.

Watch out American Idol wannabees. Sidney Bowen has arrived.

The 13-year-old resident of Dana Point has recorded a new song called "Caught in Between," which will play on New Music Tuesday across all digital platforms, including iTunes, according to her management company.

"I started performing for family and friends when I was really little. There was a show everyday at my house. When I turned five, my parents put me into musical theater and I loved it," she said. "I am a performer at heart, so if I can continue to do that through writing music, playing guitar, singing, acting and make a career that way, that would be a dream come true."

Someone making those dreams come true is David R. Woeckener, president of Real Artists Management and My Free and Clear Music. "Sidney is our youngest client and we are very excited about her musical future," Woeckener said. "Her original song 'Caught In Between' is very relevant lyrics about the pressures of today’s youth."

Woeckener has been in the artist development arena for the past 10 years, and said he learned of Bowen in October via one of the guitarists who backed up a girl he managed.

Sidney, no stranger to music, has been involved in supporting the arts and music scene throughout Orange County for the past few years. It has always been in her blood to perform, she told Laguna Niguel Patch. She has appeared at the O.C Fair twice and is rebooked for this year. She will also be at the 'Schools Out Youth Festival ' at The Coach House coming up, as well as returning to the Irvine Spectrum.

In terms of this latest song she said it stemmed from friends, as well as from being a teenager.

"I felt frustrated with my age and how I was feeling. I was too old to do kids stuff (lemonade stands), but not old enough for young adult things (make-up, driving). My 13th birthday was coming up and I was nervous about that leap.

"About the same time, I was chosen as a top 10 semi-finalist for the USA Talent Search through Kidz Bop. I made a lot of friends on there site, and as a result of that, I found these kids were going through the same things I was. All my friends were also feeling frustrated, scared and misunderstood too. I thought maybe I could be the voice for all of us and use music to do it."

And while her music career is on the rise, she says she cannot take all the credit.

"I have had many mentors over the years that have taught me so much. Rudolph Neimann was my vocal coach for a long time and taught me about feeling what you are singing, acting and expressing myself. My guitar teacher Sky Green, who is a musician/performer, has taught me so much about performing on stage. Dave Woeckener is my most recent mentor. He taught me how powerful words can be."

She said she came to Woeckener with the lyrics and melody for "Caught In Between" and he brought it to life with his arrangement.

"All these people, and others, have believed in me and supported me, and my passion for music and I am very grateful," she said.

Bowen says her own listening preferences are varied, but she "loves the music style, tempo and arrangements of Avril Lavigne. She is a pop/rocker, but still seems feminine and I like that. Kelly Clarkson's vocals are so powerful and amazing and she stays true to who she is. I admire Taylor Swift because she is a great song writer, always tells a story and is a good role model."

Like most artists Bowen gets her inspiration from her own life's antics, she said.

"Writing music is like telling people a part of who you are. It's kind of scary because you never know what people will think. I couldn't relate to most of what is on the radio lyrically, because I'm just not in those places yet," she said.

But what makes Bowen special and a true talent, Woeckener said is her stage presence, "she is a natural and she comes up with amazing lyrics at just 13."

Here's a few lines from a new song she is writing:

"I try to swallow my fear and let it go down. I tighten my hands cause there’s no one else around, to hold them. When the clouds start coming in the lights go dim, and you push me to that place that feels like sink or swim.' Screaming Inside '  - Sidney Bowen."

"That is deep, I wish I had written that," Woeckener said.

What's next for Bowen, much more, he said.

"More original songs, all the thoughts and concepts come from her. She is really a deep thinker... Working on the stage show with her band as well as continuing to book new and exciting venues," he said.

Her first single "Caught In Between" hits iTunes New Music Tuesday, May 29, as well as all other digital retail outlets worldwide. Her music video will be distributed world wide through Vevo.

"She's always writing and working," he said.

And what does it take to make it in the music world today: "Telling the truth and then delivering it like you mean it. Sidney Bowen does just that," Woeckener said.
