The Elephant Parade has finally arrived in Dana Point.
After several years' worth of planning, a three-day-long opening ceremony welcoming nearly 40 large, hand-painted, fiberglass elephants to Dana Point begins today, Friday, Aug. 23.
The event takes place at 3 p.m. at Doheny State Beach, where all the elephants will be gathered in one spot.
Then during next week, each elephant will be relocated to pre-assigned areas throughout Dana Point. Each is expected to be in place by next Thursday, Aug. 29, after which they'll be on display for everyone to enjoy until Nov. 7. Closing ceremonies for the exhibition will take place through Nov. 16.
Eventually each elephant will be auctioned off, with proceeds going towards protecting the Asian elephant, which is being threatened with extinction.
The elephants -- which in some cases have been painted by such A-through-D-list celebrities as Ricky Gervais, Lily Tomlin, Cesar Millan, and Khloe Kardashian -- were on display at a special media preview at the St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort on Thursday, Aug. 22.
