Columbus Day, a nationally recognized federal holiday, and while it is an opportunity for many to shop, the holiday does have some history.

Columbus Day remembers the Italian explorer's long journey across the Atlantic Ocean to the “New World." The voyage was victorious when land was first spotted on Oct. 12, 1492. In 1937, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt made the day a federal holiday.

Locally, most banks, government offices, and the U.S. Postal Service will be closed to observe the holiday. City Hall is open.
