CA Firm Recalls Bird Seed Due to Possible Salmonella

Magnolia Bird Farm of Anaheim, is recalling raw and roasted in-shell peanuts and Magnolia Bird Farm Bird seed mixes containing peanuts possibly purchased by some local pet owners.

Magnolia Bird Farm, based in Anaheim, CA, is recalling raw and roasted in-shell peanuts and Magnolia Bird Farm Bird seed mixes that contain peanuts, because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The peanuts contained in the mixes are being recalled by  of Portola, New Mexico, reports the U.S. Food and Drug Adminstration.

“Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Animals with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some animals will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy animals can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your animals have consumed the recalled product and have these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

No illnesses have been reported in association to the recall.

Products were distributed (Oct. 12, 2011 to Oct. 12, 2012). Peanuts in the original Sunland yellow mesh bag will have either best by dates from Oct. 12, through Oct. 12, 2013 on the packaging, or a “Crop Year” marking on the package of 2011 or 2012, up to and including Oct. 12, 2012, says FDA.

Consumers who have purchased Raw and Roasted In-shell Peanuts, and/or Magnolia Bird Farm Seeds containing peanuts, are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund, or dispose of them immediately.
