Laguna Niguel Resident & LA BioMed Board Member Dr. Richard Glassock Honored

LOS ANGELES – (March 4, 2014) – Richard J. Glassock, MD, a member of the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute’s (LA BioMed) Board of Directors, will receive the 2014 Medal of Excellence from the American Association of Kidney Patients at a March conference and will be honored throughout the year at a series of events.

 

Dr. Glassock will share the Award with Dr. Allan Collins of the University of Minnesota. Diana Clynes, director of programs and services for the American Association of Kidney Patients, said the Medal of Excellence is the organization’s “most prestigious award, honoring a renal physician for their extraordinary work in advancing patient care, ensuring the quality of patient care, being a strong patient advocate and being a mentor to fellow colleagues to ensure the continuation of these important attributes.”

Dr. Glassock is an internationally recognized expert in the field of glomerular diseases and clinical nephrology. He has published more than 450 original papers, books, book chapters, editorials and reviews. He has lectured in more than 95 countries, has been a visiting professor at more than 125 academic institutions and has trained more than 50 nephrologists.

 

He has received numerous awards, including the David Hume Memorial Award of the National Kidney Foundation, The Robert Narins Award of the American Society of Nephrology (ASN) and the Torchbearer Award of the American Kidney Fund. He is a former ASN president and a former president of the National Kidney Foundation (USA). He was awarded Mastership in the American College of Physicians in 1999. He also served as the founding Editor-in-Chief of the ASN NephSAP Journal.

 

Dr. Glassock received his B.S. in pharmacy (summa cum laude) in 1956 at the University of Arizona, Tucson. He received his M.D. with highest honors from UCLA in 1960. He joined the faculty at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center as an assistant professor of medicine in 1967 and served as chief for 13 years in the division of nephrology and hypertension in the Department of Medicine. He then served as the Department of Medicine’s chairman for the next 12 years. In 1992, he became the chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Kentucky and served there until he retired in 1998. Dr. Glassock is currently an emeritus professor at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
