Ate there once so far. It was really, REALLY good. And I'm picky.

What I've discovered is that what kids need the most are also among the simplest of things: Talking…Read More and holding. They don't need gazillion-dollar toys and Mozart in the womb. They need to be held and they need to be talked to and they need to be fed when hungry. Dads can do this, too! You can't imagine the damage done to the human psyche when these basic steps are not taken in the early years. Having parented children who missed these basic needs, I now feel like congratulating every mom in the grocery store who has her baby in the front of the cart, cooing and talking to them throughout what can be a mundane chore. They're doing great and giving the babies/toddlers exactly what they need!

It's pretty amazing what women can do: grow a baby inside their bodies, deliver the baby through…Read More their bodies, feed the baby with their bodies. Makes the male contribution seem kind of curt and lame. But that's only half of it. There's a whole world of a million little things that end up being really, really big things that matter a ton later on. Those are things frequently unseen or missed that great moms do, but for which I'm grateful. That all said, personally I place mothers of special needs children above all the rest. If it were up to me, they'd get a celebratory day all to their own.

As an adoptive mom, this is a nice sentiment, but it does not tell all the story. Not every adoption…Read More begins with a brave decision by a birth mom to give up her baby. Many children end up abandoned or taken by the state for their own protection. So I say happy Mother's Day to all the foster moms and adoptive moms of older children and a prayer for all those little ones and not-so little ones waiting for their forever families. Let's not forget them either.

What would you prefer?
High interest rates make for smaller loans and lower home prices.
Low…Read More interest rates make for massive loans and high home prices.
I think it should be a no brainer for average Americans who disapprove of debt slavery as to why low interest rate policy is a bad thing for the economy and our society.
A house is shelter, not a stock.
Yet, you would not ever hear this from the National Association of Realtors and the California Association of Realtors. They lobby for the latter.
Why? They are supposed to be industry experts and TRUSTED ADVISORS!
Do the math. What's better for a commission-only sales person? A home sale at $250,000 or a home sale at $500,000? The realtor has ZERO influence as to the market price of the sale, or the residential community where it takes place. The agency service provided is askew with the price-based commission model (3%). A fixed fee makes more sense.
Anyway.....regardless. Bernanke's out soon, rates are going up, and the Fed can't keep buying up mortgage backed securities forever. Also, the Chinese are wise to our upcoming currency crisis.
Buying might make sense if you have cash or a ton to put down. All these sales at record low rates and with very little down payment are just going to blow up again once rates rise. Higher rates in the future are going to reduce the available pool of qualified, prospective buyers we're seeing right now.

Wow, that is really good advice. Thanks, Debbie. I heard that you also own a classic Mercedes…Read More 300SDL. They will run forever! The low, sleek classic look. The car is that way, too.

I used have been in Financial services field over 28 years. We did Real Estate loans, consumer…Read More loans, Wealth Management, and Automotive Dealership contract financing. We had an assortment of New Car dealerships to Used Car dealerships that consisted of a ratio of 15/1. Of the Used Car dealerships the only reason we did business with them was their transparency regarding maintenance (oil changes every 3-5k miles as this was in the late 1980's/early 1990's), their longevity in business, and how they treated their clients both pre-sale & after. I know that many dealerships are still very good, but the bad ones are to be avoided. I love your article, Debbie, as it reminded me of my dad's advice. My dad had many antique automobiles such as a 1937 812 Cord, a 1929 L-29 Cord, a 1939 and 1940 Ford Coupe, a 1937 Hollywood Graham, a 1918 REO, and a 1960 Ford Edsel Convertible. He was a member of the Auburn, Cord, Duesenberg car club and the Antique Car Club. Dang, I miss him!

always has been about sex or the promise of perfection or happiness- it's never changed- Robert…Read More Downy Jr's father - Robert D Sr did a movie in the 60's - "Putney Swope" - a good send up of the ad game- I worked as a copywriter in the late 60's and couldn't wait to get out- never disliked a business more than the ad one- yet- some ads are pure genius- many Bud ads definitely- those Honda blowfish ads are incredible - I love a good ad- they are rare
Jeffrey Sabatini April 24, 2013 at 07:22 pm
In the mid 80s & 90s it was "SEX SELLS". The late 90s into 2005 brought us funny ads…Read More that centered around dumb stunts, usually ending up with some poor guy getting hit in the 'boys'. Between then and now, the "heart tug" or "real men cry" ads like the Budweiser "Clydesdale friends forever" ad. Which of course was the perfect follower to Bud's "Mascot dog trains horse Rocky style" and "Donkey gets a shot" ads. All ad hall of fame'rs in my humble opinion.
Sadly, it looks like the ad world has taken two giant steps backwards with the bevy of male & female eye candy flashed over disclaimers of side effects such as : Nausea, vomiting, uncontrollable flatulence, sudden weight gain, sudden weight loss, skin rash, welts & boils, hair loss, blindness, heart arrhythmia, swollen glands, muscle atrophy, Turrets, short term memory loss and how the product should not be used by or in proximity to pregnant women or nursing mothers.
However, I would like to say "feek'n about time" for all the "thank you and honor our military and first responder" theme ads.
But if I could change ONE THING in regard to this discussion... It would be to finally apply "Truth In Advertising Laws" to political ads!
What say you?
Jeffrey Sabatini April 24, 2013 at 06:37 pm
Advertising is an art in itself. The ad spoof movie Crazy People showed how important the right tag…Read More line can be with "Metamucil, use it or you will die!". Or like the motto of my former firearms dealership... "If our guns can't kill it, it's immortal!". Good times, good times.

I am sure this was written with the ignorance of what is actually already available on the internet…Read More and physics classes. Please lookup the anarchist cookbook. People are so afraid of other people that they believe withholding literature from the public will help. Restrict knowledge and increase police power right? Being a father and a resident I am diasapointed that a fellow resident thinks this owns solution.
Robin Wethe Altman April 22, 2013 at 03:35 pm
I also think that if someone is threatening to hurt you, that is grounds for calling the police.…Read More Even threats of violence can do great damage to a person mentally and physically, especially over time. You should not have to tolerate someone in your home making threats of violence. It is well worth the money and hassle to stop people who are abusive in this way and to do it early on rather than later when the threatened one is a nervous wreck.

Hate to disagree with Ms. Bass, but her advice is disturbing. You should not wait for actual…Read More violence. Threats alone, even without physical contact may warranty a 911 call. Running can be a good addiction and a way to balance life. My dad was a hard core long distance…Read More runner who did Boston 7 or 8 times. I got my weight down and started to run, but a ligament or something behind the knee gets sore and so can't do as much as I want.
Marathon runners aren't going to let this stop them - ya.

Dan Avery, I hope you start feeling better. I didn't know you were being paid, the Patch must have…Read More gotten quite a deal having an astute, highly educated leader like you.
I've read several of your blogs and they are very well written. Nobody responds to them, but they are well written.
I want you to feel very comfortable taking me apart, to use your words, because it outlines our differences. My ideas are common working class thoughts. Your ideas are those of an educated person drunk with their own knowledge and basking in the sunlight of Liberalism. So please Dan, work away. Your contributions are a major plus not only for the Patch but also for blogs expressing ideas you Liberals hate.
Again, I'm praying for your good health. I need you here commenting.

actually, Dick,
It's not just Mr. Obama, who I have zero respect for and I think he should be…Read More impeached and then tried for the murder of American Citizens. There have been several independent studies that verify 90% of the American people favor background checks and limiting the size of the magazines.
